Jesus prayed this for the church:

'Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which you have given me, that they may be one even as We are'. (John 17:11, NASB)

We can read the full extent of this particular prayer in John chapter 17. He prayed for the church in the lead-up to his death, burial, resurrection and ascension, and now that Jesus has overcome the world, our own sin, and the Devil himself, He continually prays for us, as we can see here:

'...who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.' (Romans 8:34, NASB)

And he teaches us, the church, how to pray. Of course we should always pray at every opportunity, and we in Ichthus London have been taking part in the newly re-formed prayer community which has weekly times on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as a monthly prayer day. In Ichthus Chislehurst, we are sensing that God is asking us to increase the intensity of prayer.

At the moment, we are hosting weekly evening times called 'Rise Up Together', where people can come together to worship, learn and pray together, and receive help, healing and strengthening for living for God. For as long as these sessions are in place, we intend to give one of them per month exclusively to worship and prayer.

At the end of this current run of Rise Up Together, Chislehurst congregation will be the prayer focus of the Ichthus Prayer Community, and the dates for these are the Tuesday 13th and Thursday 15th December, at 10am - 2pm and 7 - 8.15pm on both days. These will take place at the Prayer House, and are open to all who belong to Ichthus congregations.

Up until Christmas initially, the prayer planning team have decided to build in weekly times given over to prayer. These will happen every Monday morning. One week they will be early morning from 7 - 7.45, and the next from 9.45 - 11. Details are on the calendar (click here).

This coming Sunday (20th Nov) we'll be reflecting on Jesus' prayer for His church in John chapter 17, and we'll be doing some praying too.

Be encouraged to come along on Sunday, and if you're part of the congregation, please do join in with the Rise Up Together evenings and prayer times.

We're putting on an exciting event next Friday 23rd September as part of the Chislehurst Festival. Tickets can be purchased from the 2gether shop in Chislehurst or from tickets@ichthuschislehurst.org.uk. It promises to be a fabulous evening, so please feel free to come along and bring your friends too.

Described by The Scotsman as ‘Terrific’, and by BBC online as ‘A future star’, Andy Kind has been featured on BBC1, ITV, Channel 4 and national radio. In addition, he has been asked to support the likes of Tim Vine and Milton Jones on their national tours.

Andy’s comedy blends joyful exuberance with the playful ranting of a man on the wrong side of 30. Add to this a love of ad-libbing and super-strong stage presence, and you have the prospect of a great night’s entertainment.

Revive is the annual Bible week run by Ichthus Christian Fellowship, which takes place in the beautiful setting of Ashburnham Place near Battle in East Sussex. For over ten years Revive! has provided a wonderful environment for all the family to meet with and be challenged by God. The event is open to all and indeed each year we have large numbers of delegates from a wide spectrum of church denominations, traditions and streams around the UK and Europe. In addition to the diverse adult programme including celebrations, Bible studies, seminars and prayer, Revive! offers a range of events throughout the week for children, young people and students.

4Life - Discovering the Impact of Christian Help in Thailand

Here are just a couple of pictures of a great evening we had with Wasan Saenwian telling us of the great work his group CCD provides and how we can help further. Christian Care Foundation for Children with Disabilities (CCD) has been providing care and support to abandoned children with disabilities, regardless of gender, nationality, creed or religion, since 1986. Today CCD are touching the lives of over 600 children. They have 50 Thai staff, many of whom are Christian, as well as volunteers from all over the world.

Painting everything from paper to faces we had a lot of fun and laughter from everyone who took part. Parents were really pleased with the free service and the Children adored the desings by out resident Artists Jae, Laura, Cheryl & Clare. Anne-Marie organised a lovelly stencil painting session for children who wanted hands on!

I just wanted to write a note to acknowledge what a great worship team we have, and what a wonderful time we had together yesterday evening as we met together for discussion and worship.

We began by sharing stories of particularly memorable worship times that each of us had been part of, and by thinking about what it was about those times that made them so memorable. We tried to think of ways in which we could contribute to the 'success' (an odd word to use, I know) of our worship times on Sundays, in house groups, or wherever - not just as people in the worship team, but as disciples of Christ.

It's clear that if we come together with a resolve to worship Jesus, and if we are truly seeking to please Him with the offering of our lives (Romans 12), then we will see more of His kingdom breaking into our worship times, and through our lives as a blessing to others.

We're really grateful to Matt who has led our worship team so well and with such wisdom for the past few years, and to Nix for her part in the team. But now it's time for them to move on to new things, and we are asking God to help the team to adapt and grow - not only in their absence, but also as we move into new premises soon.

Please do pray for our worship team, worship leaders and worship times together.

Halls Green Houseparty

What a great weekend we had at Halls Green! A big thank you to everyone who came, and especially to everyone who served us so beautifully in so many ways, and to Rachel and the wonderful planning team. I still have no idea how Gill and her team managed to prepare such a beautiful roast dinner for so many of us on Sunday.

We also want to thank those from other Ichthus congregations who helped out with our childrens' and youth work, and of course Wes and Mary Sutton, who didn't simply teach us, but helped us to kindle a deeper desire and passion to love and serve Jesus. I will be posting audio files of Wes & Mary's sessions on this blog as soon as I can. In the mean time, does anyone have any photos? All other Sunday evenings there will be an extended time of worship and prayer at the Prayer House. These meetings will start at 5pm

'He Has Risen!'

It was absolutely lovely to celebrate Jesus' resurrection together this morning. Towards the end of the service I had a sense that God wanted to pour out his Holy Spirit like a river through the congregation. Just like the film 'River Runs Through It' we want to be a place where Gods love, joy and peace runs through us all the time and anyone who visits will be able to experience Gods presence. In my picture I saw stones of different sizes blocking the flow of water. There were some that could be removed individually by us in our own lives and some that we had to ask Jesus to remove like the stone at the tomb that was rolled away. I saw us all coming together to lift the stones out in order to let the spirit flow through us. The stones represent different areas that need giving to God and overcoming. Lets pray that the Holy Spirit will show us any areas in our lives and see individual break throughs that will have an impact on the life of the church. Isaiah 58 v 11 says ' You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.' Amen!

Waiting patiently for the Lord

Last week I saw a programme on television about a family living on a barge. They spent a year trying to renovate it inside and out in the hopes they could sail to France. On one occasion they wanted to re-paint the bowel of the boat and had to invite all their friends to help while the tide was out. They had limited time because as soon as the tide came in the bowel was covered and the opportunity gone.

This reminded me of a scripture

Psalm 40

'I waited patiently for the Lord to help me,

and he turned and heard my cry.

He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and mire.

He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.

He has given me a new song to sing,

a hymn of praise to our God.

Many will see what he has done and be amazed.

They will put their trust in the Lord.'

At church I felt we were the boat. Waiting patiently for the Lord but that while we wait God can do a deep work in us. Strengthening those places (like the bowel of the barge) before the tide comes in. But that when his Holy Spirit comes we will sail away on a new journey. The wonderful thing is that it is HIS strength not ours. ALL Him. What a relief. He has heard our cry and WILL give us a new song to sing. Praise the Lord

2gether shop hits record profits

Last year was a great year for 2gether in many ways. We saw an increase in both customers and volunteers, which affected how well we processed donations, and in turn brought an increase in sales. We generated approximately £90,000 profit, which goes to Chislehurst Youth for Christ who mentor, support and encourage young people locally.

Since January 2009 there are some interesting developments that have really helped. Firstly improved rates for our rags (recycling clothes/shoes/bags/books) make anything between £150-£250 every week. 2. Electrical items are now being tested weekly by Michael Owen from the Annunciation church and are selling well. 3. Chris Guzer launched our 2gethershop eBay store, which is building up a very good reputation based on her eBay sales skills. She tirelessly researches, sells and sends interesting items and makes anything from £150 - £400 a month.

In May and November we held two late nights to launch seasonal clothes plus we had a Winter Evening in October that was organised as part of the Chislehurst Festival, which was a huge success. For the first time last year we held a stall at the Chislehurst Fair, which made £450 and are set to do the same again this year.

In November, we launched the 2gethershop website. This gives information about the shop and the charity and can be updated with news as it happens. We have had about 300 people visiting the site, which you can find at: www.2gethershop.org.uk

In the last few weeks I have been very pleased to see an increase in customers purchasing hot drinks and using our coffee area. It adds life and a new coffee table and chairs has made the whole area look inviting. Customers also seem to know the Christian books and bibles are kept in that area and the other day I caught one old man taking ALL of the free pamphlets for his friends. The free Bibles go like hot cakes so if you have any surplus please drop them in.

Finally, we have free WiFi (internet access) and already we have had some young people sitting down with their laptops. (I think we may be the only place on the High Street that offers this free of charge!) This is an important part of the shop and an area we would like to encourage as it brings life and provides a welcoming atmosphere.

We now have 50 volunteers and I am praying I manage to slot everyone in the right places, making the most of their individual talents and trying to build strong teams each day. We rely on them, but also of course on all of you, who bring good quality donations to sell and take the time to pop in for a browse.

This Sunday Morning we have Chris Orange coming to speak to us from Mark 2:21-3:6

Sunday afternoon is the Churches Together in Chislehurst celebration at The Annunciation Church Opp. Sainsburys @ 3:30pm

It is also the Ichthus Celebration at St Dunstans at 4:30 This weeks title is What Jesus said about Religion. I just wanted to flag up now that next weeks topic Sunday 31st January is 'what Jesus said about suffering and sickness'. I am assuming that there will be an opportunity at this meeting to be prayed for, it might be an idea to begin thinking and praying about those who might benefit from this. The Mum's housegroup are going to be looking at Letters from a skeptic. If you have a copy that you wouldn't mind lending the group please could you bring your copy to church THIS Sunday and give it to either Clare Low or Lisa.

There are NO Evening House groups next week as there is a Housegroup Leaders Meeting on Wed 27th Jan.

But there is an Evening of Prayer and Worship next Friday 29th Jan. at Phil and Carol's at 8pm

New songs for a new year?

WHAT SORT OF new worship songs would you like us to use at Ichthus Chislehurst this coming year? Whilst we want to retain a large amount of the rich heritage we have in worship music over hundreds of years, the Lord continues to speak into where we are now and I believe our song choices should reflect that. I would love to hear from people in the congregation as to some of the themes and focuses that God is drawing to our attention in 2010 so that we can write some new songs to help us in our walk with Him.

What is the Lord saying to us at the moment? What are His priorities for our church? Where does our corporate focus need to be this year? It would be fantastic for you to help us draw together some ideas we could use to write some new songs in this season. Don't necessarily think musically (faster/slower/quieter/louder) but think thematically. Do we need more songs about the cross, the Body of Christ, salvation, hope for the poor, healing, etc?

Have a chat with me or drop me an email as I'd love to hear from you. I'm sure that both Rachel and Martin's talks right at the beginning of this year will provide you with lots of fruitful ideas. You can listen again to both of those talks below. And please do pray too. Ask God what it is that He's highlighting to our church right now.

And then remember Jeremiah 3:33.
